The Croydon Wind Symphony won its second State Championship in a row last weekend by winning the Victorian Concert Band Championship in B Grade. The Victorian Concert Band Championships were held at the Her Majesty's Theatre in Ballarat and managed by the Victorian Bands' League in conjunction with the Royal South Street Society. The championships were keenly contested by the Croydon Wind Symphony, Southern Area Concert Band (Moorabbin) and the Western Region Concert Band (Footscray).
Adjudicator, Major Eric Andersen (ret'd), of the Defence Force School of Music commended all the bands on their fine performances but awarded the trophy to the Croydon Wind Symphony after their performance. The varied program included Sang! By Dana Wilson, Time Remembered by Philip Sparke and Cajun Folk Songs by Frank Ticheli.
Under the baton of Musical Director, Andrew Mathers, the Croydon Wind Symphony has flourished in 2002, picking up over 10 new members since the start of the year and being heavily involved in the Maroondah Community Concert Series. Andrew Mathers stated "that the band had really lifted in the past few weeks but maintained its sense of fun and enjoyment in the music it performed."
